The Clatterbridge Private Clinic has introduced a new service to support patients who suffer from benign conditions that can be treated by using low-dosage radiotherapy rather than more conventional methods. The conditions that can be treated in this way are:
- Dupuytren’s Contracture – a condition where fingers begin to bend towards your hand.
- Ledderhose Disease – a condition where hard, painful lumps appear on the base of the foot.
- Plantar Fasciitis – a condition that causes pain on the base of the foot.
- Eczema and Psoriasis – inflammatory conditions causing dry, itchy and scaly skin.
Low-dose radiotherapy is a safe, effective and non-invasive way to treat those suffering from Dupuytren’s contracture, Ledderhose disease, Plantar Fasciitis or Eczema and Psoriasis. It is highly effective in treating the symptoms and preventing the progression or worsening of the disease and is delivered quickly and easily.
Duncan Armfield, General Manager of Clatterbridge Private Clinic, says,
“Dr Lampkin approached me to set the service up for our patients as availability on the NHS just wasn’t there. He was keen to have this available as a non-invasive and very effective alternative to the more traditional methods of treating the conditions. The low-dose radiotherapy used to treat benign conditions is becoming well known for the millions of people who suffer, and he told me the demand to support our patients is certainly there as an alternative to surgery.
“Of course, we were more than happy to support our patients, and hence, we agreed to set this up. It is a relatively low-cost treatment compared to some of the other treatments available. It is quick, as well, with up to 5 sets of 15-minute treatments done at the clinic. Afterwards, there is no recovery period, like you would have post-surgery.”
Dr Lampkin, the consultant specialist in charge of the non-invasive radiotherapy treatment for benign conditions, said:
“The safe treatment of benign conditions using low dosage Radiotherapy means patients can now have non-surgical interventions for these conditions, drastically reducing treatment and recovery times. In our consultation, I can answer all your questions and design the best treatment regime for you, delivered by our expert radiotherapists here at the Clatterbridge Private Clinic”.
Patient story – Gemma Howell, Olympian and Judo pro
The treatment is now available and already being used to support our patients. One recent patient who has benefitted from this revolutionary new treatment is famous Olympian and judo star, Gemma Howell. Gemma has had an extremely successful career achieving many titles such as, Winner of European Championship Gold, 5 times British Champion, and Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist. She competed in the London 2012 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, amongst her numerous other achievements at senior and junior level.
Gemma developed Dupuytren’s contracture and has recently had her first treatment at the private clinic by Dr Lampkin to shrink the lumps in her hand and stop progression. Gemma tells us:
“The treatment was very quick and pain free. My hands just got very itchy for a short while afterwards. The consultation was very thorough and it was made very clear what the radiotherapy would involve. I am extremely grateful for the treatment and think it has caused the bumps on my hands to soften and shrink slightly. I am hopeful this will prevent further Dupuytren’s contracture so I can carry on using my hands normally. Thank you very much Dr Lampkin and Clatterbridge hospital.”
