Contact UsWhat is Skin cancer?
Skin cancer is cancer that starts in the skin, and it can be split into two groups depending on the cell type from which it develops. This includes melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
We provide tailored skin cancer care that works for you and your life and gives you the best chance of successful treatment.
Types of skin cancer
As mentioned, there are two main types of skin cancer, depending on the type of skin cell they originate from. This includes:
- Melanoma
- Non-melanoma
What is melanoma skin cancer?
Melanoma skin cancer starts in the cells called melanocytes, which are found in the skin. Melanoma can also start in the eye. You can get melanoma anywhere on your skin, including in a mole, on your palms and soles of your feet and even under your nails.
What is non-melanoma skin cancer?
Non-melanoma skin cancer includes the following types of cancer:
- Basal cell skin cancer – also known as basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
- Squamous cell skin cancer – this is also known as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- Other rare types of cancer, such as Kaposi’s sarcoma, cutaneous lymphoma, and sarcoma
Skin cancer symptoms
Skin cancers can vary in how they look, and symptoms can present in a range of ways, including:
- A new or changing mole
- Other unusual or unexplained skin changes
- An itch or sore that does not go away
- A lump on the skin that can be small, slow growing, shiny and pink or red
- Red, patchy skin that may also be itchy
Skin cancer diagnosis and treatment pathway
A patient receives a diagnosis from their dermatologist, and they can then be referred to Clatterbridge Private. Our expert skin cancer consultants review the case and work with the regional multidisciplinary team to discuss the patient’s diagnosis and make a plan for them to receive treatment, with the best approach for them.
Patients can receive treatment at the Clatterbridge Private Clinic in Liverpool or the Wirral.
If surgery is required, we refer those patients to trusted colleagues who work in other centres across the region to get surgery before potentially receiving further treatment at the clinic.
Skin cancer treatments
The treatment you have for skin cancer depends on the type of skin cancer you have, where it is, if it has spread and your general health.
There is a range of different treatments commonly used to treat skin cancer, including:
Treatment at Clatterbridge allows consultants to take a more flexible approach, tailoring treatment plans to patients and providing access to treatments that are not routinely available through the NHS. For example, adjuvant immunotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma is not yet a standard treatment in the public sector. At Clatterbridge Private Clinic, we can offer this treatment to specific patients.
Patients at the private clinic receive a more personalised treatment, receiving one-to-one care from their consultant and our multidisciplinary team, as well as faster appointments and round-the-clock support. Treatments are delivered to patients in our state-of-the-art clinics, either in Liverpool or Wirral.
