For the past 11 years, February 4th has marked World Cancer Day – a critical issue that most of us will be affected by in some way in our lives. 2019 marks the beginning of the #IAmAndIWill campaign; which is all about giving a voice to people and letting them know that no matter who you are, you have the power to help win the battle against cancer.
With 9.6 million people dying from Cancer every year and being the second-leading cause of death worldwide, we know that more has got to be done.
Of course, sadly there’s only so much that can be done in some cases, which is why it’s important to take the proper precautions and catch it before it’s too late. At least one third of common cancers are preventable; some common causes which we can try and control include:
- Alcohol Consumption – in excessive amounts, this can increase the chances of bowel, breast, mouth, throat, liver and stomach cancer.
- Being Overweight/Obese – A general increase in weight, especially in adults, is linked to increasing the risk of developing 12 different types of cancers.
- Tobacco – Tobacco smoke contains around 80 different cancer-causing substances. At the moment, tobacco use is responsible for around 22% of cancer deaths.
- Workplace Hazards – Some people risk exposure to cancer-causing substances due to where they work.
Here at Clatterbridge Private Clinic, we’re always working to raise awareness and to support new research; which is why 49% of our profits are re-invested back into the NHS.
